IONS is situated in Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaw people. Unceded means that the Mi’kmaq have never relinquished, sold, traded, or transferred ownership of their land to European settler colonies, yet land was taken over without their consent through various processes of settler colonialism. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship, which the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik people first signed with the British Crown in 1726. These Treaties did not involve the surrendering of rights to the lands and resources they had traditionally used and occupied. We are all Treaty People.

We further acknowledge that Nova Scotia is the birthplace of Black culture and heritage in Canada. People of African descent have shared these lands for over 400 years, and over 50 strong and resourceful African Nova Scotian communities exist here today.

We are committed to the struggle against systems of oppression that have resulted in profound inequities and the denial of self-determination rights.     Work Description:

    I help non-profit leaders with financial oversight of their organizations, when they do not have that technical financial/accounting experience or expertise in-house.

    For larger organizations, this usually means working with the board Treasurer to make sure the proper systems and processes and training are in place for them oversee the work of the financial/accounting staff, and to be confident in presenting the results and information to the board and other stakeholders.

    In smaller organizations where there isn't a dedicated accountant or financial person on staff, this may mean working with the ED or other volunteers to oversee the work of an external bookkeeper, or to train internal staff on proper financial record keeping or systems to utilize, so that accurate records are prepared to provide to the board or other stakeholders.

    Rates:

    I only work with non-profit organizations, and typically do not do any work on an hourly rate. I have some services targeted at larger non-profit organizations that are charged at a recurring monthly rate, and all my project services are quoted and charged on a custom per-project basis to ensure there is never any un-budgeted cost overrun. Roughly speaking though, my costs work out to less than what small or mid-sized accounting firm would charge for similar services that are typically more broad and aimed at the for-profit sector. What I do for smaller organizations is try to offer as much free or group advice as possible. This month (November, 2023) I am launching a free bi-weekly newsletter targeted at those overseeing the finances of non-profits of any size, and I am always happy to provide free group calls or webinars to any group of non-profit leaders that are interested in a common topic around accounting/oversight/financial reporting, or to do free 30 minute calls with an individual or single organization as well about as specific topic or issue.
