SUMMARY:Generating Impact With AI
DESCRIPTION:IONS is launching Generating Impact with AI: Empowering the Community Impact Sector\, a six-week training series!\n\n\nIn today’s fast-paced work environment\, employees and leaders alike face mounting challenges: information overload\, constant communication demands\, and economic pressures. These factors are driving burnout and diminishing productivity\, even as new tools emerge to alleviate these issues. To address these challenges\, IONS is launching Generating Impact with AI: Empowering the Community Impact Sector\, a six-week training series designed to help organizations leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to transform their operations and improve outcomes. \nThis program offers practical\, virtual workshops (90 minutes each) between February and June\, focused on building capacity and skills in using AI tools such as MS365 Co-pilot\, Google Gemini\, and ChatGPT. Training topics include understanding AI’s strengths\, risks\, and ethical considerations; identifying use cases; implementing safeguards; mastering prompt engineering; and effectively deploying AI organization-wide. Delivered in three cohorts—focused on MS365\, Google\, or a hybrid approach—the training also features shared sessions on open-source tools to ensure participants gain skills applicable across platforms. \nOpen to anyone working in the Community Impact Sector in Nova Scotia\, the program is tailored to meet diverse organizational needs\, addressing challenges like workload management\, accessibility\, and inclusivity. By providing hands-on\, actionable training\, IONS empowers participants to confidently adopt AI to enhance productivity\, improve flexibility\, and foster innovation. This initiative promotes ethical\, impactful use of AI while fostering collaboration and shared learning across the sector. \n \nWhat will this look like?\nCohort 1: We will have 6 sessions every Thursday from 1:30-3:00pm (via Zoom) from February 6th to March 20th (no session the week of March 13th because of March break) \nParticipants will be emailed Zoom links prior to the sessions \n \nThe training will cover the following topics:\n\nUnderstanding AI (strengths\, weaknesses\, and risks)\nIdentifying use cases for AI support\nImplementing safeguards for using AI responsibly\nHow to use AI (i.e.\, prompt engineering)\nHow to get better with AI and find more use cases\nHow to deploy AI effectively through the organization\n\n \nKey Takeaways for Participants:\n\nDevelop a clear understanding of generative AI and its potential.Identify opportunities to apply AI to address work challenges.\nLearn to navigate and mitigate AI risks\, such as privacy and security.\nMaster prompt engineering to achieve better AI outcomes.\nCreate a plan to safely and effectively integrate AI into your role or organization.\nConnect with peers across the province to share insights and solutions.\nAccess session recordings and valuable resources.\n\n \nAudience: Anyone working in the Community Impact Sector (Nonprofit/charitable organizations) with an interest in learning more about AI(Not open to volunteers) \nCapacity: Max of 30 participants \n \nCan’t make these sessions? Join us for a Sunday afternoon at the charming Oxford Taproom on Quinpool Road\, where you’ll be immersed in a cozy\, vintage atmosphere filled with eclectic décor. \nThis is not just an opportunity to create your own masterpiece; it’s also a fantastic networking event! This is a space where people can connect as individuals\, not just by what’s on their business cards. No forced conversation—just relaxed\, authentic connections and a chance to truly engage with others. Don’t miss out on this beautiful blend of art and connection! \nWHEN & WHERE\nSunday\, Jan 12th | 2 PM – 5 PM\nThe Oxford Taproom / 6418 Quinpool Rd\, Halifax\, NS \nPainting Theme: Beer Bottle & Botanicals (please see image below). \nFacilitator Intro \nHi there! I’m Jacquelyn Miccolis\, and I’m excited to welcome you to Watercolors on Tap! For those I haven’t met yet\, I’m a local artist and dedicated workshop facilitator. While running my brick-and-mortar\, “Sparkles n’ Sawdust Studio\,” I had the joy of sharing my love for creativity with hundreds of wonderful adults over the years. I can’t wait to return to my roots and get back behind the paintbrush with all of you! \nWhat Can You Expect? \nAt Watercolors on Tap\, you’ll be welcomed with a warm smile in a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for exploring your creative side! In the first hour\, you’ll enjoy a drink while I guide you through basic painting techniques to help you feel at ease. \nWe’ll then take a break where you can socialize\, stretch your legs\, and network with fellow participants. Food and beverages will be available for purchase\, making it easy to grab a bite or another drink. \nAfter the break\, I’ll lead you in creating loose doodle art using fine-point ink and beautiful layers of watercolor. Watercolors are fantastic because they create stunning\, translucent swirls of color and won’t stain your clothes or make a mess. You’ll leave with a completed painting ready to frame\, along with authentic connections made in a fun\, relaxed setting! \nWhat Do You Need to Bring? \nJust bring your fabulous self! We’ll have a list of everyone who’s registered\, so no need to print your ticket—let’s save some trees! We provide all the supplies you’ll need for your painting. Just a quick note: all art supplies are for use during the event and can’t be taken home. \nWho Is This Event For? \nThis creative experience is designed for adults 19 and older—sorry\, no exceptions! We love welcoming people from all walks of life to unwind and relax before the start of a new week. You don’t need any artistic skills or experience to join us—just a willingness to have fun! Every ticket includes admission plus one refreshing beverage of your choice (up to $8.50). Whether you prefer something spirited or a delightful non-alcoholic option\, we’ve got you covered! \nAccessibility Note: This event is held on the upper floor of the Oxford Taproom. Due to the staircase that leads to this cozy oasis\, it is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. \nHow Do I Sign Up? \nTickets can be purchased exclusively through Eventbrite in advance. Unfortunately\, we cannot accommodate last-minute sign-ups or in-person ticket sales. \nWhere Can I Park? \nMost side streets nearby offer free or 2-hour parking\, and there’s a main bus stop just around the corner\, making it easy to get here. \nWhat Is the Refund Policy? \nAll ticket sales are final\, so please double-check that you’re able to attend the correct date before purchasing. If you can’t make it\, feel free to give your ticket to a friend who can come in your place! In the rare case of a snowstorm or if I happen to get sick\, we’ll reschedule for another Sunday and let you know via e-mail. \nIf you’ve ever felt out of place at a traditional networking event or just want to try something new\, come join us at the Oxford Taproom! Let’s connect over creativity\, collaboration\, and a cold bevvy. No pressure\, just fun. 🎨🍻 \nFor more information about Supernova Events visit www.supernovaeventshfx.com \nConnect with us on Facebook and Instagram @thesupernovamarket \nIf you have any questions\, please email us at contact.supernovaevents@gmail.com

SUMMARY:IONS Exchange 2024
DESCRIPTION:IONS Exchange is a two-day gathering for people in the Community Impact sector in Nova Scotia to learn together and celebrate the work we do\n\n\nIONS Exchange 2024: Reciprocity in Practice\n  \nWe’re holding space for people to come together\, rest\, connect with each other\, and share ideas with the intention of tapping into the creative energy and inspiration needed to break the status quo. We hear you: current systems and structures in the Community Impact (Nonprofit) Sector can make it hard to support our communities and ourselves; you’re feeling isolated\, disconnected\, and burnt out. You do the often undervalued yet critical work to make a positive impact in your communities – but where is the space to slow down\, recharge\, and get energized by what’s possible. \nIONS Exchange is a two-day gathering that offers an opportunity for the people working and volunteering in the sector to be in community together\, learn from Indigenous knowledge holders\, gain new tools and ideas\, and celebrate the work we are doing for our communities. \nExchange speaks to the intentional design of the event\, which will encourage relationship development and reciprocal knowledge sharing. This gathering is meant to give space to develop meaningful relationships within our network\, learn about and offer promising practices and resources to support our work\, and provide a sense of rest\, unity\, and empowerment to lift the spirit. IONS Exchange will offer a variety of ways and activities for people to learn\, create\, inspire\, and connect. \nTo learn more about the event details\, please visit exchangens.ca \n  \nIONS Exchange Stipend\nOur desire is for Exchange to be accessible to people working in the Community Impact Sector\, especially those from Equity Deserving Communities. We have a limited number of Stipends available to cover registration\, travel\, and/or accommodations – these are given through an application process based on need and number. \nWe wish for the diversity of our sector to be reflected in the attendance of this event. We recognize the disproportionate barriers in particular to Indigenous\, Black\, and Racialized participants to engage in events such as Exchange\, as well as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and disability communities. Thus\, we are prioritizing removing financial barriers for people from these Equity Deserving Communities to encourage the conditions for greater exchange and relationship building between people from different parts of our sector. \nTo apply for an IONS Exchange Stipend please fill out the following online form. \nPlease note\, we will only be accepting applications for Stipends until Monday\, April 8\, at 12pm noon. This is so that we have time to organize and communicate about the stipends to applicants\, and people can make decisions about attendance and travel. We may accept and approve stipend applications on a rolling basis. \n  \nAccessibility Information\nThe Eventbrite registration has a section to fill out accessibility needs or requests. Please indicate any accessibility needs you may have in your Eventbrite registration form. If you have general questions or concerns related to accessibility\, please contact IONS Engagement Lead Clary Chambers – clary@ions.ca. We wish to support participants and remove barriers to participation as much as possible – we have some funding to cover additional accessibility costs on a case-by-case basis. \nEvent Details and Location Feautures\nTo learn more about the event and facility features\, please visit exchangens.ca \n  \nMasking and COVID-19 Considerations\nWe will not be requiring the use of masks at the event\, but encourage wearing a mask if that is preferable or comfortable for you. Please reconsider your attendance if you are feeling unwell in order to protect the health of our community. \n

SUMMARY:Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition to celebrate your work with a full day of activities\, performances\, and awards!\n\n\nBelow the Surface: Celebrating the Depth of Impact\nWhat if the Community Impact (Nonprofit) Sector didn’t exist? Programs and services are just the tip of the iceberg. The sector’s role includes trust-building and strengthening social ties\, important advocacy efforts\, therapeutic and wellness supports through arts and recreation\, and giving people the connections and experiences to be able to tap into their whole selves. \nThe sector has long been an incubator for generating ideas for a better Nova Scotia – one that centres relationships\, creativity\, community\, and equity. Innovation comes from a place of trust and knowing what’s needed for those experiencing injustices. \nImpact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) and United Way Halifax\, with support from the Province of Nova Scotia are pleased to present the Community Impact Sector Day of Recognition. This year’s theme\, “Below the Surface: Celebrating the Depth of Impact” recognizes the influence of our work which reaches every corner of Nova Scotia. Our goal is to surface the essential role that impact organizations play in innovating this province\, pushing for change\, and improving collective quality of life. \nPart of shedding light on this depth of impact includes imagining what it would look like if these organizations and groups were absent in society. What would happen? \nOn Friday May 12th\, we’ll be celebrating you and your work with a full day of activities\, performances\, and awards. The morning’s capacity building workshops will focus on how to amplify your stories of impact and how to leverage media to influence change. The afternoon will be hosted by Portia Clark of CBC Information Morning and will feature live art performances and 20 Invisible Champion Awards\, presented by the Bhayana Family Foundation. The event will be hosted in person at the Cedar Event Centre in Halifax and livestreamed across the province. Please join us in recognizing the worth of the Community Impact Sector’s work. \nWe are proud to recognize our supportive sponsors\, the Bhayana Family Foundation\, and the Province of Nova Scotia. \n \nEngaging those in community work from across the province is an important part of celebrating the sector’s collective work. To increase accessibility in attending the in-person event\, we’re happy to offer a number of $150 travel stipends to attendees outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Stipends will prioritize members of equity-deserving communities living in rural areas. Please fill out the application here to be considered for a stipend: Stipend Application \nFor those who are able and would like to contribute\, Pay it Forward tickets are available to support the travel stipend for members of equity-deserving communities. Pay it Forward tickets are by donation\, and not mandatory in attending the event. To make a donation of any amount\, please select the Pay it Forward ticket option in registration. Thank you! \n \nPlease note\, we are encouraging a maximum of up to 5 attendees per organization to help ensure the event can be shared by a wide variety organizations from across the sector and province. If there are any concerns related to this\, please reach out to hello@ions.ca \n \nUnited Way Halifax and Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) in partnership with the Government of Nova Scotia and the Bhayana Family Foundation hold an annual day of recognition for the community impact sector. The day is proclaimed by the Government of Nova Scotia to bring awareness and recognition to the sector and the crucial work done by so many social impact organizations across the province. The Bhayana Family Foundation initiated the proclamation process in 2019 with United Way Halifax and IONS\, and in 2020 the First Day of Recognition was proclaimed. Additionally\, as part of its national mandate to increase recognition of this important sector\, sponsors 20 Invisible Champion Awards annually that recognize the commitment and impact by nonprofit staff and organizations. They are presented as part of this event.\n\nIf you have any questions about the schedule\, accessibility measures\, the venue\, and/or food options not outlined in the FAQs below\, please write to Michelle—she will be happy to assist you! michellemunro@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Ethical Story Building for Narrative Change - Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Explore the fundamentals of narrative change and learn ways to integrate it into strategic plans\, storytelling\, and communications!\n\n\nSeries Description:\nCommunications is a strategic site of intervention for impact organizations (nonprofits and charities). Media\, policymakers\, sector colleagues and the public are all influenced by the dominant\, often harmful\, narratives that shape our work. When we see communications as a tool for change\, not just outreach and awareness\, we can build capacity to shift the conversations that influence our work. This is the work of narrative power building. \nNarrative power is “the ability to create leverage over those who set the incentives\, rules and norms that shape society and human behavior.” (Rashad Robinson\, 2018). When we build this power together\, we interrupt the pervasive narratives that undermine our work towards justice\, equity\, decolonization\, diversity\, and inclusion (JEDDI). \nEthical Story Building for Narrative Change is a two-part training series designed to help equip organizations with the tools to understand and harness narrative power towards social change. Participants will explore the fundamentals of narrative change as a practice and learn tangible ways to integrate it into their strategic planning\, storytelling\, and communications. These interactive sessions will enable organizations to come together and build shared capacity for narrative change. \nAlthough recommended\, if you were unable to attend session 1\, you are still able to register for session 2. \nSession 2: Lived Experience Storytelling\nBuilding on the frameworks and information in the first session\, this session will explore how organizations can uplift lived experience/first voice storytellers through trauma-informed communications. We will bring a clear JEDDI approach to this work to ensure that we interrupt harmful and exploitative storytelling and communications practices and contribute to broader narratives of justice and change. We will explore how lived experience storytelling accelerates narrative change work and how organizations can do it safely. \nParticipants will leave with: \n\nAn understanding of the risks and opportunities of lived experience storytelling\nTools to understand power and authorship \nA practical process for working with storytellers\n\nFacilitated by:\nSarah Joynt-Bowe (she/they) \n\n\n\nSarah is a communications and narrative change strategist with over 15 years of experience developing dynamic\, effective work for organizations in three countries and countless sectors. Over the course of her career\, she has worked across strategic functions from in-house corporate communications to consulting and agency planning. \nShe has proven skills in campaign development\, brand strategy\, qualitative research\, and workshop facilitation with an emphasis on building radical narrative power. Sarah is also an active community organizer working within anti-racist\, abolitionist\, and feminist social movements.

DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for affordable employee group benefit options for your organization? Join us for a lunch and learn to see what fits for you!\n\n\n\nAre you looking for affordable employee group benefit options for your organization?\n\nCost and administrative burdens create organizational barriers to access health benefits for staff and their families.
