Summary of the Position:

The Clean Education & Engagement team’s focus is to develop and deliver programming that fosters awareness, appreciation and empathy for the natural world. We equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to make educated decisions, and show them that they have the power to make a difference in their own lives, workplaces and communities.

We are looking for an experienced facilitator to develop and deliver our Professional Learning workshops aimed at supporting grade P-8 educators in teaching about climate change.

Reporting to the Manager of Education & Engagement, the Professional Learning Lead will be responsible for the delivery of engaging, participatory PL Workshops for P-8 educators across Nova Scotia (virtually and in-person). We have developed two streams of workshops that will need to be delivered during the 2022-23 school year—one for grades 7-8, and one for grades 4-6. Each workshop is designed to help educators explore connections to climate change across multiple subject areas, using inquiry-based learning. This role will consist of delivering existing workshops, and leading the development of our next workshop, focused on grades P-3.

In addition to facilitating workshops, the PL Lead will be responsible for working with teacher-created lesson plans and editing them into a ‘Teacher’s Guide on Climate Change’. The PL Lead will be comfortable and familiar with the Nova Scotia School Curriculum and have excellent, concise writing and editing skills.

This role regularly communicates with other educators, Indigenous knowledge holders, scientists, and other experts in the field. This is an exciting opportunity to join a positive, collaborative team and contribute to building effective, meaningful climate education in our region.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and deliver PL workshops for educators of grades 4-8, including diverse groups of educators (including formal, non-formal, pre-service, First Nations, etc.) both online and in-person across Nova Scotia.
  • Develop a Professional Learning workshop on environmental learning for educators of grades P-3.
  • Track and update Key Performance Indicators.
  • Source and secure relevant materials and supplies for program delivery.
  • Lead the continued development of a Teacher’s Resource on Climate Education, which will include editing teacher-created lesson plans, activities and resources.
  • Collect and analyze feedback to improve future program delivery.
  • Remain current on both emerging climate science and best practices for climate education.
  • Support the Project Coordinator in promoting, recruiting and scheduling the PL Workshops.
  • Assist the Program Development Lead in developing teacher-facing resources to support Clean’s student-facing education programming.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in a classroom setting, or experience facilitating/leading workshops with adults, and working with diverse groups.
  • Post-secondary education related degree, Bachelor of Education with specialization in Elementary considered an asset.
  • Experience delivering workshops or programing virtually.
  • High degree of comfort and familiarity with curriculum documents and lesson plans.
  • Comfortable and familiar with climate change science and/or environmental learning.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented approach.
  • French language abilities considered an asset.
  • Positive, outgoing and able to work independently or in a team.

Working Conditions:

Additional hours, or time outside of the normal work hours, may be required to meet operational requirements of planning and delivering specific projects at specific times of the year. Regular travel, within Nova Scotia (anticipated on average six overnights per month), will be required for this position.
