Metro Community Housing Association is a non-profit, community-based agency that provides support to persons living with mental illness. MCHA operates residential settings throughout Halifax and Dartmouth under the umbrella of Department of Community Services and has grown to 15 locations following the opening of our newest home in 2021.
Established in 1974, MCHA manages small option homes, group homes, complex care homes, a community transition house, and residential care facility. We also offer supported apartment services to those participants living independently.

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking casual staff to join our Residential Care Facility (RCF) in Dartmouth. Located on Pleasant Street, this facility supports up to 21 participants and has a licensed kitchen. Staff in this location assume care-take responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry for large numbers, as well as providing client support. If you like a busy, ‘on your feet’ environment, this might be the right position for you! We are hiring people on the spot! (conditional offers are based on clear criminal record check, vulnerable sector search and positive reference checks).
We rely on our casual staff to fill-in for shifts when regular employees are unavailable for work. The RCF is staffed 24/7; staff typically work 10-hour shifts including days, evenings and overnight awake shifts. Our casuals do not have a set schedule and aren’t guaranteed a minimum number of hours, although there are typically ample shifts available given the size of our staff teams. Casuals can accept or decline shifts based on their availability and are contacted in advance and on short notice. We are seeking casuals who are available to promptly complete training and work a minimum of 1-2 shifts per month.
MCHA supports continuous learning and offers valuable training opportunities. Our casuals are eligible to apply for internal employment opportunities, including part-time or full-time unionized positions. These positions receive a higher rate of pay, as well as shift premiums. Our permanent FT and PT staff also qualify for health and dental coverage, Group RSPs, paid vacation, and other Collective Agreement benefits.
Areas of Responsibility:
Provide a safe home environment and develop positive rapport with participants
Administer medications and ensure accurate record-keeping
Prepare and serve daily meals for 20+ people, oversee clean up, and maintain food handling practices
Respond appropriately in times of crisis and manage emergencies as they arise
Ensure cleanliness of the facility, including bedrooms and bathrooms
Perform laundry service for participants
Complete stocktaking and inventory control of all household products and groceries
Provide personal care if/when needed
Complete mandatory training and recertification’s as required
Ability to perform routine household tasks which include bending, lifting, standing for long periods, climbing stairs and winter maintenance such as shovelling and salting
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent
Work, volunteer, or lived experience in a care profession/support capacity OR Work experience with cooking, cleaning, laundry, food service industry, or personal care
Desire to provide compassionate care to persons living with mental illness
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook email, online training)

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
Standard First Aid/CPR certification (Level C)
Food Handlers training
Ability to complete core competency training and other training/recertification’s during course of employment
Proof of full vaccination, in accordance with the “Nova Scotia COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination Protocol in High-Risk Settings” order
The rate of pay for this position is $14.50/hour, plus 4% vacation pay. The rate for overnight sleep shifts $136.00. Other perks include casual dress code and free parking. Also, our casual Staff are currently eligible to receive a $25.00 incentive bonus for each shift worked until March 31, 2023.
