The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) is recruiting for a permanent, part-time Outreach and Social Coordinator to help guide the organization’s public-facing outreach and promotional efforts. The successful candidate will be a self-starter and a great team player who is equally comfortable working independently and as part of a small, nimble team. They will demonstrate a passion for relationship-building, sensitivity to the needs of various equity-deserving communities, excellent communication and organizational skills, and an enthusiasm for local literary communities.

Compensation: $16,861 ($42,153 annual salary pro-rated) with optional benefits package
Hours: 16 hours per week (division of hours over week is flexible)
Location: 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS, with the option of up to 50% remote work

The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) is a membership-based, registered, not-for-profit organization with charitable status based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The WFNS serves the professional needs of some 700+ members engaged in a diverse range of writing activities. Our work includes organizing workshops and professional development programming, connecting members to resources, promoting member events, and advocating on behalf of writers. We also coordinate literary awards, a mentorship program, a contest for unpublished writers, and the Writers In The Schools program.

Our mission is to foster creative writing and the profession of writing in Nova Scotia; provide advice and assistance to writers at all stages of their careers; encourage greater public recognition of Nova Scotian writers and their achievements; and enhance the literary arts in our regional and national culture.

Outreach and Social Coordinator’s key areas of responsibility

Outreach responsibilities:

  • Work with staff to identify gaps in WFNS’s outreach strategies and propose initiatives to address them
  • Help WFNS staff and Board forge and maintain partnerships with community organizations that serve equity-deserving populations in Nova Scotia (including Mi’kmaw and other Indigenous writers, Black and African Nova Scotian writers, 2SLGBTQIA+ writers, and writers living with disabilities)
  • Connect with writers and members outside of HRM to increase our support to writers across the province
  • Help WFNS staff plan events and programs that aim to foster a sense of community within our membership
  • Liaise with the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Committee of the Board

Social responsibilities:

  • Work with Executive Director to create and maintain an internal marketing strategy and calendar
  • Contribute content to weekly member newsletter and special website features, including aggregating and summarizing deadline-based opportunities for writers, such as submission and application calls
  • Create graphics and copy for social media posts
  • Help Executive Director promote programs and events to local media

Other responsibilities:

  • Assist WFNS staff in delivering special events throughout the year
  • Occasionally helping Executive Director with funding applications
  • Occasionally helping Program Manager (Membership Services) with evening workshop facilitation

Requirements:

  • Demonstrable background/interest in literature or publishing
  • Experience with Meta social media platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven initiative and self-management (working independently)
  • Confidence in addressing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) concerns and in working cross-culturally

Assets:

  • Experience working with equity-deserving communities
  • Experience with a broader variety of social media platforms
  • Graphic design experience
  • Familiarity with WordPress websites
  • Project management skills
