    About Nourish Nova Scotia

Located in Mi’kma’ki, Nourish Nova Scotia was first established in 2013 to support the development of school breakfast programs across the province. Over time, we have expanded our work to help cultivate healthy eating environments for children and youth across the province – through food literacy, capacity building, and advocacy.

Today, we work across school and community settings to increase access to nutritious foods; create welcoming spaces for youth to connect through food; and facilitate youth leadership in food programs and policies that affect them.

Expertise in at least one of the following areas:

    • Fundraising and fund development
    • Finance and accounting
    • Legal and risk management
    • Board Governance policy
    • Human resources
    • Local food systems
    • Entrepreneurship/business management

Demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to collaborative governance.

Previous experience on a non-profit governance board is considered an asset.

    Commitment

    Board of Directors:

The Board of Directors meets four times per year for two‑hour sessions, typically held virtually on weekdays (Monday–Friday). Additional commitments include: At least once annually, board members participate in an in‑person session lasting half a day to a full day. Board members are also expected to serve on at least one committee (described above).

    Committees:

Committees generally meet monthly to quarterly, with additional meetings scheduled as needed based on the committee’s work and priorities. Current committees include:

HR & Legal Committee: Supports the Executive Director and Operations staff in the development, management and implementation of Nourish Nova Scotia’s human resources policies, processes and contracts. In alignment with the Nourish Nova Scotia strategic action plan, the committee will strive to ensure that equity is centered in our human resources policies and practice, with intentional approaches that help to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Fund Development Committee: Guides and supports the Executive Director and the Fund Development staff in securing financial resources in support of Nourish Nova Scotia programs and activities. The Committee members will focus on building long term relationships with donors and ensuring sustainability of the organization through fundraising efforts.

Business Committee: Provides business oversight including budgets, financial reports and administrative functions such as the annual reports, obligations related to finance matters such as contracts, memorandums of understanding and adherence to internal and external policy and procedures for Nourish Nova Scotia.
